No, CPS cannot require you to have certain appliances. There are some things that they can require for safety reasons, such as heat in areas with extremely cold temperatures, and they require a home to have electricity. A CPS home check requires the MINIMAL level of care. I've been a CPS social worker for 9 years (in CA) and have had clients with no running water (but they were able to use the neighbor's for bathroom and shower needs), no cooking supplies at all (living in a motel and feeding the children only fast food) and families with no furniture who were all camping out on the floor with blankets. In each of these situations there were no issues with the things the family didn't have and most time we were able to help...such as buying beds for the children, helping the family pay a back utility bill or getting a homeless family into a housing program.

There is nothing wrong with your living situation. You have the ability to make food for your children and as long as they are well fed it's not CPS's concern if you cook the food in an oven, microwave, crock pot or buy it at McDonald's.

So don't worry. As long as you make sure the home is safe (meaning no tools laying around or exposed wiring from the remodel) then everything is fine.

To my knowledge, there is no law anywhere saying you "have" to have an oven in your home. You have several viable alternatives so I would not be concerned.

Most people eat out of the microwave. And I don't think they have fast rules its all about how you act when they come over. Just have the house clean where you are not remodeling.

The 1930s. My house was built in the 1920s, so 30s era furnishings would make it true to the period.

I also would go for the late 40' + early 50's, that was the type of house I spent my childhood and we had some great furniture.

"house furniture" I should have wrote.
